Commercial Vehicles

Commercial trucks are trucks, truck tractors or station wagons utilized primarily in a commercial capacity. Registration fees are based upon the declared laden weight and, in some instances, the age of the vehicle.

All commercial trucks and truck tractors are required to display the name of the commercial establishment or the words “Commercial Vehicle” permanently and prominently upon the outside of the vehicle, in letters not less than 2 inches high.

If you are hauling a commercial trailer, you must have a commercial plate your vehicle.  The plates must match.

The registration for commercial vehicles weighted 15,000 pounds and under is figured by the vehicle’s laden weight and age. As the vehicle gets older the yearly registration fee decreases.

Fee Breakdown at or under 15,000 lb

Year 1-5 = $102.50

Year 6 = $54.50

Year 7+ = $31.50

The registration fees for commercial vehicles weighted more than 15,000 pounds are based solely on the given laden weight.

Fee Breakdown 15,001 lb and Up

15,001 – 18,000 = $127.50

18,001 – 21,000 = $162.50

21,001 – 24,000 = $197.50

24,001 – 27,000 = $232.50

27,001 – 30,000 = $267.50

30,001 – 36,00 = $332.50

36,001 – 39,000 = $357.50

If the actual laden weight is more than what the vehicle is registered at you will need change the vehicle’s registered laden weight to avoid fines from ODOT. You can raise the laden weight on a commercial vehicle at any time.

When you raise the weight on a commercial vehicle, you pay the prorated difference for the remainder of the year.

Laden Weight

Laden weight means the combined weight of the vehicle and the cargo or payload it is hauling. This cargo could be in the form of a separate trailer or cargo transported within vehicle itself. The weight declared should reflect the maximum weight (vehicle + load) to be carried while the vehicle is registered.

Non-Expiring Trailers

Non-expiring trailers registration needs to be renewed every year. They do not get a decal with each registration which is why they are called non expiring. They still have registration that needs to be renewed annually. Every non-expiring trailer’s registration is due annually the last day of December. Titling a non-expiring trailer is typically around $70 and it is $7.56 to renew every year after.

IRP

The IRP is an agreement among U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and most provinces of Canada. The agreement provides for the payment of apportionable registration fees, based upon total distance operated in all jurisdictions.

Apportionable registration fees are paid to the various states in which vehicles of a fleet are operated. Only one license plate (aka an “apportioned tag” or  “prorated tag”) and cab card are issued for each fleet vehicle. The license plate and cab card are issued by the home state. You must keep track of the mileage traveled in each state and file this information with the government of your home state.

If Oklahoma is your home state, the vehicle is titled at a tag agency and then the plate is picked up at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
