Answers on Real id, dl & id

All Oklahoma DLs and IDs are a new format card.  Along with adding security features on the card, there are two types.  Compliant means you brought in the required identification documents and non-compliant (not for real id purposes) means you did not.

Flight requirements will not go into effect until May of 2025.  After May 2025, you will need a federally compliant DL or ID to fly even domestically.

No, a passport is still required to travel outside of the United States of America.

Starting May 2025 a federally compliant ID will be needed to travel by airplane in the United States. If you travel by air within the United States frequently or enter federal buildings, but do not wish to keep up a passport a real ID might be beneficial to you.

There is a full list of needed documents you can view here.  We cannot accept photocopies of documents.  All name changes will have to be properly documented and legal name has to match across required documents.

If your name has changed due to a marriage (ie changing name to spouses name) we need the marriage certificate or a certified copy to scan. If your name has changed due to a divorce (ie changing a name back to maiden name) we need the divorce decree and the divorce decree must state you are taking back your previous name. Divorce decrees DO NOT work for showing a change to a married name. So if your previous last name was Moore and your married last name was Smith a divorce decree DOES NOT qualify to show the change from Moore (maiden) to Smith (married). Only from Smith back to Moore. All other name changes need to have the correct court appointed name change documents for the transaction to proceed.

All license and ID renewals/replacements now need an identity document when renewing. Sometimes a credential that is not expired by three years or more is enough. Sometimes another original identity document is needed. A proof of residency is also needed when updating addresses. All the eligible documents can be found on the Real ID checklist.

Marriage license’s and divorcee decrees are not interchangeable for showing a change of name. If you bring in your divorce decree it is NOT proof that you changed to your married name. It is only proof that you are returning to your maiden name. Likewise, a marriage license would not be proof of returning to a maiden name after divorce. For example your previous last name was Moore and your married last name was Darrow a divorce decree DOES NOT qualify to show the change from Moore (maiden) to Darrow (married). Only from Darrow back to Moore. So, if you have been married you WILL need to bring in your marriage license regardless of divorce decrees. Failure to do so will result in you not being issued a federally compliant ID.

We can only take printed copies of all documentation. Documents on a phone screen or other screen can not be scanned in a legible manner.

An original document is the goverment or state issued document. They are typically heavier weight paper with crisp fine printing. Photocopied documents and digital documents do not work as original documents. Most government issued documents will show VOID as a watermark if photocopied.

We can take state issued birth certificates as proof of identity. In some cases the county or city birth certificate may be usable but it is a case by case basis. Anything like a hospital birth certificate does not work for proof of identity.

The most common name change document is a marriage license. If your marriage license has a “to be known as” line or something to that effect then it is a name change document. Divorce decrees work if they explicitly state the person is changing to returning to a name. Divorce decree does not show the change to the married name. Ammendments to birth certificates and court ordered name change documents are also name change documents. Naturalization certificate also gives the person a chance to change their name and if they chose that option they would need the Naturalization certificate to show the name change.

No, we are required to scan in the documents so the state has electronic copies. We return all documents back to the customer.

For a lost real ID you need to bring in an identity document to get a replacement. The same goes for lost standard DL and ID. Proof of address and social is not required for a lost real ID or replacement AS LONG AS the address is not being updated.

A real ID or compliant drivers license functions as a normal driver’s license, but just works as a federal ID as well because you have proven your identity to a federal standard.

This is our provided document checklist, you can also find it throughout our “DL/Real ID” page.  Also, if you come and visit our facility there is a large poster on the wall of all the documents and several sheets on the counter for your viewing.

The online license renewal method typically experiences delays up to a few weeks past the typical 4-6 week time frame. Unfortunately, this method is done strictly through Service Oklahoma and we have no access to the software they use. If your license is currently processing through the online renewal method we cannot process your license here through the new system. We recommend emailing them to get an update on your ID’s status or calling the number Service Oklahoma has provided. The email is info@service.ok.gov and the number is (405) 522 – 7000.

Due to the software and certain requirements, there are some CDLs that we can renew at the Tag Agency.  Some of those do require two trips to complete as there is a Service Oklahoma override required.  There are some that they do not let us process.  A restriction K or L or endorsement H or X means that we cannot do it regardless. As of March 2026, we are now doing CDL’s by appointment only.

CDL’s will need proof of residency for all ID transactions. This can not be the CDL – it must be a separate document that proves residency.

All restriction K’s must be processed at a Service Oklahoma location. The same applies for H or X endorsements on CDL’s. If you attempt it at a tag agency they will not be able to finish your license and you will have to go to Service Oklahoma to finish.

You can do an out of state license at our agency if the license is not commercial or expired by more than 6 months. You will need additional documentation in order for us to process you. We do NOT do out of state licenses on Saturdays due to the additional time they take to process. Only SOK can process first time ID’s or accept customers that have been issued any out of state ID’s.

Yes, we can process first issuance license and permits under certain conditions. For permits the written test either must be exempt or taken beforehand. For first issuance license the written test must also either be exempt or taken beforehand AND the driving test must be done somewhere else. Our tag agency does NOT do the driving test. We do not do any first issuance on Saturdays due to their lengthier nature.

If you have never had an ID before in the state of Oklahoma, you will have to go to a main Service Oklahoma location. Otherwise we can process ID’s at our location. They typically cost $25.

A temporary license is a license issued to someone who is still working on attaining their US citizenship. The license is perfectly legal and works as a standard license or ID. The expiration date coincides with the duration of your stay in the US. All temporary licenses must be processed at a main Service Oklahoma location.

No, Service Oklahoma no longer allows tag agencies to renew or replaces temporary licenses. Anyone possessing a temporary license must go to a main Service Oklahoma location to have it renewed or replaced.

A regular drivers education manual can either be bought in person at our tag agency for $10 or found online. A CDL drivers education manual can only be found online. A motorcycle education manual can only be found online as well.

You will have to go to a main Service Oklahoma location to take the written test. There is also an online option approved by Service Oklahoma known as KnowTo Drive.

If you took the test at Francis Tuttle, you will have to go to a main Service Oklahoma location still.  If you have a DL-10, you can walk in to our facility any time before 4 pm and we will work you between appointments.

Yes, if you want to switch to a class D DL we can downgrade you at a tag agency.

We are doing all CDL’s by appointment as of March 2026. The new system has made processing those a far more complicated process. All other DL/ID/Real ID will remain as walk ins for the time being.

No, the actual ID card arrives at your given address around 2-3 weeks after your appointment. You are given a temporary receipt paper which legally acts as your license in the interim.

All restrictions and endorsements are dealt with by Service Oklahoma; with the exception of the graduated drivers license restriction.  We can also process a voluntary CDL downgrade which surrenders all of those CDL specific endorsement and restrictions.

Driver’s license now have the option of four or eight year expiration. Eight years are twice the cost of a four year and can only be requested when renewing your license, not replacing it. A state ID for customers over 65 are no longer indefinite and carry a 16 year expiration date.

The state only allows individuals to have one form of compliant or “real” identification. So you can’t have a complaint driver’s license and state ID only one of those two can be compliant. Now as of Feb 2026 Oklahomans are only allowed one credential per person, so you can have a license or ID not both.

If your real ID does not come to you in the mail by that 30 days there is a number at the bottom of the temporary receipt to call and resolve the issue with. That number is (405) 522-7000. An undeliverable ID will be returned to a main Service Oklahoma location and held for 6 months waiting to be collected.

The real Id and regular class D driver’s license have a base cost of $38.50 for a four year renewal and $25 for a replacement. All drivers license regardless of real ID status (federal compliance) are  are free at age 65. State ID’s are free for customers age 65 and older.

No, your social security number is kept on file in the system but does not visibly show up anywhere on your license.

If you are unable to pose properly for a DL photo your credential will be rejected and you will receive a letter in the mail explaining it is due to medical reasons. In order to override this rejection you must go to your doctor and get your case reviewed. Until then you can have a state ID that proves your identity but does not allow you to drive.

The new ID’s have added security features that are not able to be reproduced by machinery that can be kept at tag agencies. So all ID’s are now outsourced and printed out of state at a dedicated facility and then promptly mailed to your given mailing address.

There is currently no way to change you name online or in mail through Service Oklahoma for an ID. However, you can change your address online through Service Oklahoma.

We suggest making your opinions about drivers license and desire for a more functional system known to you local representative, Service Oklahoma, or to Governor Stitt directly.

Unfortunately Governor Stitt passing legislation and signing executive orders does not change our software directly. If any of his changes follow through with tech updates we will revise our website accordingly and make the information known to our customers.

The requirements for a real ID are set differently than passports by the federal government even though they are both valid forms of federal ID. Regardless of what you presented to receive your passport you will need proof of birth, proof of social security number either through documents or verbally disclosing that with us, and two proofs of address with the names matching throughout all documents.
